RSM Art Conservation is the oldest private conservation service provider in Australia, having been founded in Sydney (New South Wales) in 1971.  At that time, the company consisted of two full time staff members, working on the conservation of a variety of objects and a range of projects. RSM Art Conservation relocated to Queensland in 1986, establishing dedicated conservation studios in Mapleton (on the Queensland Sunshine Coast) and in the Brisbane metropolitan area.

The company has continued treating a wide range of artworks and has successfully undertaken a number of large architectural projects (examples are found throughout the site). In addition to the two original owners, RSM now employs two full time staff members and four contractors. Full time staff members and contractors have dedicated areas of specialisation in; conservation framing, gilding, paintings conservation, object and textile conservation, paper conservation, and architectural conservation.

We are not currently looking for staff, but would like to have you on our books for future reference as positions do arise :

Testimonial

"I am delighted to recommend RSM Art Conservation to anyone wishing to improve the appearance of their art collection while enhancing its value at the same time.

Some areas of one of our valuable paintings were flaking and without action would have most certainly come off and exposed the canvas. The expert team at RSM Art Conservation painstakingly restored this valued possession to its former glory. In fact I don’t think it looked as vibrant when I first bought the painting many years ago.
The team also cleaned every other painting in our collection. The results were that noticeable regular visitors to our residence have commented on the improvement.
Don’t be concerned with the cost. Something is only dear or cheap compared with what you get for your money. I was amazed at the value for money we received by using RSM for this very important task.
I am now looking forward to enjoying our treasured collection for many years to come."

Conservation Workshops for Picture Framers, Art Dealers and Collectors

art restoration class
Richard McDonald, who has been a conservator in private practice for over 40 years, is holding a series of weekend workshops for people working or collecting in the field of fine arts.

The workshops are held on a weekend at the main studio in Bowen Hills in Brisbane.

There is one being held this coming weekend. The next workshop is due to be held sometime in mid November.

We intend to hold workshops in the second half of 2015.

The workshops cover general maintenance of artworks, and shows general cleaning procedures, the handling and storage of paintings and paper. Repairs to paper and canvas. The general techniques used by conservators, including the reversibility of treatments used in conservation.

The workshop was very informative about conservation products and techniques.  The format of the workshop was excellent encouraging everyone to participate.  Still not sure if I would feel confident enough to submerge documents in water.   I now understand the process for restoring artworks and how many different skills are required.
