Statues at Marist Bros - Ashgrove

The “Tower Building” as it is known, was built around 1930. It is heritage listed, and its complete restoration, and modification is now under way. The project began early December, and is due to be finished in October 2108. The statues are all carved from alabaster, and the bases are marble. They were made by an Italian company, “Galleria Roma”

The states are extremely dirty, with years of pollution, they also have areas of lichen and mould growth.

RSM Art conservation, was asked if they could consider the cleaning and repair of the single statues, and the group in the centre of the courtyard. There are also four small statues on the main entrance stairway.

These two photos show the state of the state of Mary, before and after cleaning. The clean has been done carefully by hand using no more than a non-ionic detergent, and soft brushes. A final clean with calcium carbonate on the alabaster remove the last vestiges of dirt.

We have been working on these for two weeks now, and will probably be working on site for another six weeks.
